Mustard Seed

He said therefore: To what is the kingdom of God like, and whereunto shall I resemble it? It is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and cast into his garden, and it grew and became a great tree, and the birds of the air lodged in the branches thereof. And again he said: Whereunto shall I esteem the kingdom of God to be like? It is like to leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.
Luke 13:18-21 (Douay-Rheims)

Prayer

Dear Father your love is like a mustard seed for me. You planted it in my heart and it has grown into a strong tree. Occasionally you prune the branches that wither and die, you shape me in a beautiful way so that I can shelter and love those you send my way. You planted the seed of faith that grew and blossomed where I too share what you have so generously given me. For me dear Father I can compare the kingdom of God by the love and faith that has grown within me. For many love is an emotion without thought to you and how it is given to others unconditionally, how it spreads and grows when given freely. Giving love and loving those who are hardened eventually find growth of a seed that was dormant. Your love dear Father is the greatest mustard seed I will ever plant and watch grow as I spread it to others. Amen

Increase Our Faith

And the apostles said to the Lord: Increase our faith.

And the Lord said: If you had faith like to a grain of mustard seed, you might say to this mulberry tree, Be thou rooted up, and be thou transplanted into the sea: and it would obey you. But which of you having a servant ploughing, or feeding cattle, will say to him, when he is come from the field: Immediately go, sit down to meat: And will not rather say to him: Make ready my supper, and gird thyself, and serve me, whilst I eat and drink, and afterwards thou shalt eat and drink? Doth he thank that servant, for doing the things which he commanded him? I think not. So you also, when you shall have done all these things that are commanded you, say: We are unprofitable servants; we have done that which we ought to do.
Luke 17:5-10 (Douay-Rheims)

Prayer

Dear Father I too have asked to increase my faith. So many times I failed in believing what you gave me. And yet it is here in the Scriptures that tell me about a seed and how small it is can move anything. I have worked so hard to bring that seed to fruit in my life. I have done much to also destroy it and yet it grows by the grace of your hand. You ask much of me dear Father and I respond to what you seek, just as the servants do the bidding of their masters after being out in the field all day, they come in to continue serving even though they are hungry. It is your will that I do and not my own that enables me to live my life in faithfulness. It is doing what you ask of me when I hunger and thirst for more of your love. You never gave up even when I fell, you still loved me in spite of my errors. When I hurt you the most, you took my heart and made it yours to show me how much you love me. That is the greatest gift I will ever receive, the love of a Father, unconditional and ever growing, just like the mustard seed. Amen

Mustard Seed

Gospel of Matthew 13:31-35

Prayer

Dear Father we are like the seeds that grow in your kingdom. We grow with your Word, we blossom and spread. We too are like the flowers in the fields where the seeds that are ready fall to the soil and begin to take root and the process begins anew. An ongoing process that continues to grow. Jesus gave us parables to help us understand what the kingdom of heaven is like and if anything it is a continual growth in faith. We nurture it, we are fruitful and the seeds are spread and planted. Just as leaven goes a long way. The mustard seed is small, but when it grows it becomes large.

Dear Father your kingdom is truly like a mustard seed, it is planted in us and it grows, where we become full of life. We are filled with you! What joy a heart knows when the reality of the mustard seed comes to blossom within us. How it takes root and grows, where you water it with your love. May we continue to grow in love and faith as a the mustard seed takes root and blossom into the Kingdom of God. Amen
