Jonah

And the multitudes running together, he began to say: This generation is a wicked generation: it asketh a sign, and a sign shall not be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. For as Jonas was a sign to the Ninivites; so shall the Son of man also be to this generation. The queen of the south shall rise in the judgment with the men of this generation, and shall condemn them: because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold more than Solomon here. The men of Ninive shall rise in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it; because they did penance at the preaching of Jonas; and behold more than Jonas here.
Luke 11:29-32 (Douay-Rheims Bible)

Prayer Reflection

Dear Father they converted when they knew their time was short. Poor Jonah was afraid to even go and preach to the Ninevites to forewarn them. Just like this reading don't we all tend to seek a sign to tell us what's to come. Does that mean we are the evil generation then. Or is it that you love us enough to help us convert back to you from our sinfulness. One thing you did was send us your Son as a sign of your love. We often forget that after this came about with Ninevites, much later we received a man who would change us for the better. So with Jesus' coming there truly was something greater than Jonah and it was you. Amen
