Third Monday in Our Advent Journey

When he had come into the temple area, the chief priests and the elders of the people approached him as he was teaching and said, "By what authority are you doing these things? And who gave you this authority?" (NAB) Matthew 21:23

Do we do this today also? Question Jesus' authority in our life. On his teaching us God's way. Is it possible that we are not open to his teachings. The chief priests and elders knew their own way, so when Jesus began teaching about their errors, they wanted to know who sent him and why. Is it so hard for us to see when we are being shown or taught, that the way we are is faulty. God gave Jesus the authority to teach, to guide us back home to him. Jesus was also not dressed as a chief priest, or elder to distinguish him as one of them. His garments were not of the Elite. Did that also account for their questioning by whose authority he is doing these things. What were they really afraid of? Change and perhaps knowing that they were filling their coffers but not filling their souls and tending to the flocks. We do the same, we mind our own business, we hoard many things, but do we tend to the flock.
